Several smartphone models from Samsung, Motorola, and Google currently do not support internet traffic transmission via the Starlink satellite system in third-party applications, according to PCMag, citing mobile operator T-Mobile.
Among the affected devices are the new Google Pixel 9a and multiple 2024 Motorola models.
The Starlink technology enables apps that have implemented it to connect to Starlink and transmit data via satellite internet. However, T-Mobile clarified that compatibility is limited, and not all smartphones automatically support the feature.
T-Mobile has published a list of 14 models currently unable to transmit internet data via Starlink:

Samsung Galaxy A14
Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, S21 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3, Z Fold4
Approximately 70 phone models, including iPhone 13–16 and the latest Samsung Galaxy devices, are already compatible with Starlink for SMS and MMS, but satellite internet traffic support is not yet universal. For instance, the Galaxy A14 and S21 series can send satellite SMS messages but cannot transmit data.
T-Mobile has promised that the list of compatible devices will expand significantly starting October 1, though the specific reasons for current restrictions were not disclosed.
Data transmission via Starlink allows users to access SMS, images, video, and audio in areas without cellular coverage. However, applications must be updated by developers to utilise this feature. For example, on the upcoming Pixel 10, launching August 28, Starlink connectivity will initially be available only in Google Maps, Google Messages, and Find Hub, with later support planned for AccuWeather, WhatsApp, and X.
