Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull says more accessible and cheaper Chinese artificial intelligence models will take the lead from Silicon Valley in a global arms race ahead of a high-stakes meeting between Beijing and Washington overshadowed by fears of an existential threat to humanity.
Turnbull’s comments that developers like DeepSeek and others will overtake the American technology giants that are leading the race to create more sophisticated AI models came as his former cybersecurity adviser Alastair MacGibbon called for an outright ban on the use of Chinese technology in government work and critical infrastructure.
