The NBA is hoping NBA Europe can become a “popular complement” to European and FIBA basketball, giving fans an “opportunity to embrace new teams, new stars, and help the sport thrive globally,” according to Gary Washburn of the BOSTON GLOBE. The NBA has already built an international league in Africa, and the goal is to “pour resources not only into the new basketball league but the development of aspiring players, coaches, and officials.” A “major loophole” that could emerge is “whether the revenues created from the league could be shared with the NBA players” as part of their CBA agreement, but those are issues that will “eventually be addressed.” For now, the NBA is “determined to take over Europe — and they seemingly have all the resources and opportunity to do so” (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/19).
