It’s not every day that a special effects artist will call a new creative atmosphere inspiring.

But that is what Tyler Green, also an educator, said of his new studio at Market Street Creatives, a vendor and art space.

Green, a Litchfield native, chose the Torrington venue to replace his much-smaller studio at Whiting Mills in Winsted, where he and his husband Anthony Vidiera ran Tyler Green FX Studio, offering classes and using the space for other projects.

But after 8 years, they outgrew their digs in Winsted and began searching for a larger venue where both men could do their own work, while continuing their popular classes and events.

Their favorite creation, the Spooktacular Halloween celebration, will now be held at Market Street Creatives, where the railroad tracks used by the Naugatuck Railroad and its partner, the Railway Museum of New England in Thomaston, run right past the building. The Market Street site was a former manufacturing company in Torrington.

For the Spooktacular, a vintage train car will be converted into a Halloween adventure. “The Last Stop” is a paid-ticket event set for Oct. 9, as well as a live magic show and shopping. A daylong public event, free of charge, will follow Oct. 10.

The move to Torrington, Green and Videira said, has already brought big changes to their respective businesses.

Videira, a commercial photographer, uses a portion of the new studio for his photo/video work, while also creating candles and other products for his “Chartreuse on the Loose” line.

“Chartreuse on the Loose, it turned into a business almost by mistake,” he said. “I started making stickers for my laptop, and people liked them and wanted them. I started doing that 12 years ago; I taught myself to make candles, soap, laser designs, stickers. Now I’m in the top 1 percent at Etsy. It helped pay my bills during covid.”

Green, whose classes fill up quickly and are offered weekly, has filled his side of the studio with ceiling-to-floor prints and paintings and collections of novelties, paintings, toys and other collections. The décor is macabre; delightful to those who enjoy this kind of creativity and imagination.

The studio’s individual work stations have plenty of lighting and mirrors, lots of space for supplies, and an additional room for Green’s own creative work: sculptures, masks and figures for commissions.

“When I first walked into this studio, it took my breath away,” Green said. “It wasn’t finished, so everything that’s been done in here is customized, just the way we wanted it.

“I also love how we’re in this vendor space, there’s so much to see,” he said. “I don’t ever have to shop at Amazon again.”

Green’s classes instruct students on how to make frightening, artistic masks, sculptures and body parts, using rubber, silicone, various mediums of paint and other methods. Most of the FX classes focus on the grotesque, vintage and modern-day horror, translated by the imaginations of the students. The most popular, according to Green, are the latex mask-making and SFX injury workshops.

Green is the owner of Creative Genius LLC, and an inventor of consumer gadgets and accessories. Among many other products, according to his website, he “conceptualized and developed the Wonderband Systems™, an intricate intelligent concept for gripping items, with applications in multiple industries.”

Green was a finalist on SyFy’s Face Off, a televised special effects contest, where contestants were challenged to make masks and costumes, and has made appearances on the Today Show, NBC Connecticut and CT Style.

Green and Videira said they wanted to be in Torrington because “It’s so full of art,” said Green.

“The community, the people, the spaces, what they’re doing, it’s such a great place to be,” he said. “My motto has always been, stay creative’ and that’s what inspires me here. The creativity in the building is amazing.”

“The studio is a place to go, where we can do what we love to do,” Videira said. “Whatever we need, we can build it right here. It’s perfect.”

Since opening in 2025, Market Street Creatives, owned by Stepcraft CEO Erick Royer, has amassed 225 individual vendors, who display their wares in kiosks or booths throughout the main floor of the building, located at 100 Lawton St., Torrington.

Shoppers will find repurposed antiques, leather work, clothing, housewares, body and hair care, food products, and gifts of every description.

Royer and his staff also offer classes and events for startup businesses, teaching new vendors and makers how to market their designs and products.

Royer said vendors pay a fee to rent their selling space, without a commission. “We’re not making anything on what they’re selling, we’re just collecting the rent,” Royer said.

“Each vendor has their own stall and they can decorate it the way they want, using their own marketing and displays,” Royer said. “A lot of them work from home, and they sometimes can’t afford a retail space. This gives them that opportunity; they have a physical location now.”

Videira was impressed by the number of vendors – which now number 225 – and the opportunity to sell what they make in Torrington.

“When I first went inside (the vendor market) it was overwhelming, but not in a bad way,” he said. “It’s pretty great. You can walk in, get a beverage and walk around. The staff is there to help, to answer questions.

“I’ve also seen people’s businesses grow,” he said. “They start with a tiny kiosk, and the next thing you know, that kiosk becomes a booth. To see all the work that’s being done here, it’s pretty exciting.”

The Spooktacular at the Warehouse, said Videira, is a perfect fit for Torrington’s Halloween celebrations.

“We’ve always loved Halloween and all of the weird, spooky and unusual things that come along with it,” he said. “We wanted to create a place where the vendors, who might feel like the outsiders at another market, could feel like this event was made specifically for them.”

The Whiting Mills event drew an estimated 3,000-plus visitors during its inaugural weekend and continued to attract large crowds during its three-year run in Winsted, said Green.

“Being here, with the Naugatuck Railroad right outside, it’s amazing,” he said. “This year’s event will be beyond anything we’ve done so far.”
