The foreign minister has announced that Australia will continue its proud tradition of more than 70 years of helping shape international maritime standards by pursuing a renomination with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

Penny Wong said that belonging to the IMO would see Australia continue to offer its practical expertise and a regional voice to decisions affecting global maritime safety, environmental protection, international trade, and sustainable shipping.

“As a middle power, we will continue to support the rules and norms that underpin shared prosperity and shared security,” Wong said, noting Australia’s commitment to consensus-building.
