YOUNG LION MAKES TRADE CALL
Out-of-contract Brisbane midfielder Sam Marshall has decided on St Kilda as his preferred trade destination.
That’s according to AFL Media’s Cal Twomey, who reports on Thursday the 20-year-old picked the Saints over fellow suitor Essendon.
Marshall played in the Lions’ 2025 premiership triumph over Geelong but was subbed off, and played just two senior games this year.
The 13-gamer is a Brisbane Academy product and played his junior footy in Queensland, but was a boarder at Melbourne Grammar in the latter years of his schooling while also playing for the Sandringham Dragons.
In 16 VFL games, Marshall averaged 25 disposals and 4.8 marks but was largely unable to crack coach Chris Fagan’ss senior side.
As Marshall is not eligible for free agency, a trade between Brisbane and St Kilda will likely have to be agreed to in the coming days.
After Pick 8, though, the Saints aren’t slated to pick again until the 44th selection.

FRESH TWIST IN WHITFIELD RACE
Carlton is reportedly the “heavy favourite” to land Giants rebounder Lachie Whitfield in the trade period.
It comes as Melbourne, another contender to lure the 32-year-old, is “walking back its interest” in the dual All-Australian.
Whitfield, who is said to have undergone a medical with the Blues in recent days, has a year left on his GWS contract but is open to a move back to his home state.
But the Demons, who have made no secret of their desire to upgrade across half-back, have pushed back on the Giants’ lofty asking price.
“Not only do people at Carlton and the Giants believe that he will nominate Carlton as his preferred destination, but I also understand this morning that Melbourne is walking back his interest,” Seven’s Tom Morris told AFL Trade Radio on Thursday.
“Not because they’re not interested in Whitfield and they don’t like him as a player, more because they’re baulking at the Giants’ want for him.
“The Giants want a top-20 pick; Melbourne is saying absolutely no way … they essentially walk away unless the Giants relax what they are asking for in return.
“(It) means that Carlton is not just in the box seat, it is the heavy, heavy favourite to land him if they can come up with that sort of draft capital.”
Seven’s Xander McGuire reported on Tuesday night that the Blues were considering a deal of around three years for Whitfield, who has played 278 AFL games.
