Australian-born striker Mitchell Baker was at the centre of an extraordinary finale as Indonesia booked their spot in the final of the FIFA ASEAN Cup final.
Baker scored five goals while Aussie-raised Macarthur FC attacker Luke Vickery also found the back of the net for Indonesia, who defeated Bangladesh 9-2 in their final Group A fixture on Thursday to advance to the tournament decider on goal difference.
Indonesia led 6-1 at half-time but with Bangladesh scoring late and Malaysia winning 6-0, the world number 118 required two more goals in stoppage time to pip the latter to top spot and a place in the ASEAN Cup final.
John Herdman’s Indonesia got the job done in wild stoppage-time scenes as Kevin Diks scored the country’s eighth in the 96th minute before Melbourne-born Baker sealed the deal a minute later, sparking pandemonium.
Indonesia will now meet Thailand in the final on Monday, October 5.
“I think it’s the most crazy (game) I’ve ever played in. But just reiterating what the coach said. The fans are amazing. They got us over the line,” Baker said in a post-match press conference.
Indonesia head coach Herdman added: “Yesterday in training, we did a drill and I asked them, ‘How many goals can we score in 30 seconds?’.
“They said three. I said, ‘No way,’ but we scored three goals in 37 seconds. They believed it.”
Baker, who has scored nine goals in seven international appearances, became an Indonesian citizen at an official swear-in ceremony in July.
Last year, Mitchell Baker was drafted by Colorado Rapids – who have signed Sydney FC sensation Akol Akon following the success of Socceroos star Lucas Herrington – with pick 10 in the MLS Superdraft.
Across two seasons with the Hoyas, he scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 42 matches, with 40 of those being starts.
Baker moved to the United States in 2022, attending Northwood School in Lake Placid, New York where he played for two years and captained his school football side Black Rock FC, winning back-to-back Golden Boots and being named an All-American by United Soccer Coaches in 2023.
Incredibly, Baker holds the Northwood record for goals scored, having netted a ridiculous 141 goals in two and a half years.
“We’ll enjoy tonight, but we have a final plan. We’re striving to win Indonesia’s first trophy,” said Baker.
