Samsung may have missed the first wave of the Googlebook launch, but it could still be preparing something for us. A mysterious Samsung laptop has now surfaced on Geekbench running Android 17. However it isn’t clear if this is a Googlebook or Samsung’s own Android Galaxy Book.

Samsung may be the next major Googlebook partner, or maybe not

Tipster @yabhishekhd on X spotted an upcoming Samsung laptop with the model number XE940XSA on Geekbench. The listing shows the laptop running Android 17 instead of Windows or ChromeOS. An earlier report also suggests Samsung is working on an Android 17-based Galaxy Book.

The device features Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X Elite chip (codenamed Hamoa), according to the Geekbench listing. The chip uses 12 CPU cores, with four cores clocked at 3.42GHz and eight cores reaching 4.01GHz. It also features an Adreno X1-85 GPU and 16GB of RAM.

In Geekbench 7, the laptop scored 2,513 points in the single-core test and 15,214 points in the multi-core test. However, the listing doesn’t reveal the final product name or any other details about Samsung’s plans for the device.

However, an earlier report points to something different. It suggests Samsung is working on its own Android 17-based Galaxy Book, complete with Samsung’s software and features such as One UI and DeX. That means this Geekbench listing could also be an early test unit for Samsung’s own Android laptop.

Google recently introduced Googlebook as its new premium laptop category, blending Android and ChromeOS technologies. The platform supports native Android apps, cross-device features, Gemini Intelligence, and security and management features.

The first Googlebook devices are coming from Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. Samsung was absent from the initial list of partners, despite its experience with both Galaxy Books running Windows and Galaxy Chromebooks running ChromeOS.

There are also reasons why this could be a Samsung Googlebook. Googlebook OS is based on Android 17, so an early engineering build could simply appear as Android 17 in Geekbench. The Snapdragon X Elite chip, Adreno X1-85 GPU, and 16GB of RAM also match Google’s reference specifications for Snapdragon X Googlebooks.

For now, there’s no definitive answer. The laptop could be Samsung’s own Android-powered Galaxy Book, or it could be the company’s entry into the Googlebook family. More concrete evidence should eventually tell us what Samsung is actually building.
