This hardware mod adds two additional 8-pin power connectors to the RTX 5090 graphics card. It keeps wire temperatures below 40°C under load.

When it comes to melting NVIDIA RTX 12V-2×6 connectors, third-party adapters aren’t the best solution, since they can also melt. Fuses also do not solve the problem – they only turn off the graphics card and the PC. It seems the mod by Reddit user DallasGrave avoids these shortcomings.

The modder attached an add-on board with two 8-pin power connectors to the top of his MSI RTX 5090. This way, the video card is powered by three connectors: the original 12-pin and two additional ones. This reduces the current through the wires, helping prevent overheating.

The RTX 5090's two additional power connectors reduced the maximum wire temperature to 40°C under load

“A printed circuit board is soldered to the pins of the original 12VHPWR connector, which allows power from two 8-pin connectors. Power consumption and temperature of all wires are significantly lower, with approximately ~3A. The card was operated at full load for 48 hours at 550W, and the temperature of the wires never exceeded 40°C even at the connection point,” DallasGrave describes the design and its operation.

ASUS explored another promising solution to the melting-connector problem. The video card has a modified power supply circuit, and the PSU operates at 48 V instead of 24 V, which not only reduces current but also increases power consumption.
