Australia produces a great deal of food and exports much of it successfully. Export strength is a major economic asset, but it does not guarantee food security at home. As the Australian government develops its National Food Security Strategy, the focus should extend beyond production and exports to whether Australians can continue to obtain safe, affordable, and nutritious food when the system is under pressure.
Australia can remain a successful agricultural exporter while strengthening food security at home. Good policy should support both.
