Canadian Karate Kid fans might be surprised to know that a musical of their favourite movie is currently running in downtown Toronto.
The Karate Kid: The Musical opened Sept. 29 at the Princess of Wales theatre right on King St. and is scheduled to run there until Nov. 1. Previously the musical was in the U.K.
Based on the book by Robert Mark Kamen, directed by Amon Miyamoto, produced by Michael Wolk and starring Gino Ochello (Daniel), Adrian Pang (Mr. Miyagi), Abigail Amin (Ali Mills), Matt Mills (John Kreese), and Joe Simmons (Johnny Lawrence), Karate Kid: The Musical aims to retell the story of the original 1984 original movie and its many sequels to the theatrical audience.
The music and lyrics, written by Drew Gasparini, are an important element, as they have been to each successive series.
According to a press release, Karate Kid: The Musical is “the powerful bond between Daniel and Mr. Miyagi, who teaches that karate isn’t about fighting, it’s about balance, dignity, and respect.”
“A Tony Award-winning design team transforms iconic cinematic moments into an emotionally charged, kinetic stage experience. Honouring the roots of the timeless story, this musical celebrates resilience, mentorship, and the quiet strength that bridges generations.”
YouTuber MickeyJoTheatre posted an excellent behind-the-scenes video with interviews of the cast with dress rehearsal footage.
The main objective of The Karate Kid: The Musical is not simply to rehash the story of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi, but to honour the essence of the story while expanding the characters and adding something new while putting a theatrical spin.
Much more than wax on and wax off.
