California’s most prestigious Sprint Car event of the year took place this weekend with the 71st Mike Curb Gold Cup Race of Champions presented by NOS Energy Drink hosts Kubota High Limit Racing cashing out a whopping $100,071 winner’s share Saturday.

Outrunning fellow Californian Justin Sanders in a bottom-dominant feature down the stretch, 19-year-old Corey Day made a little bit of history by capping off his third-straight Gold Cup victory, which ties the great Steve Kinser when he won three-straight from 1986-88.

Day led a race-high 22 laps, including the final 18, while Sanders led the remaining 18 laps from Lap 5-22. Brad Sweet ran as high as second from Laps 5-7, but settled for the final step on the podium in third as his right-rear blew crossing the checkers.

Fourth-running Brent Marks, fifth-running Tanner Thorson, sixth-running Giovanni Scelzi and 19th-running Rico Abreu were among drivers who suffered flat tires before Saturday’s checkered flag.
