The Chicago White Sox hadn’t won a playoff series in more than 20 years, but they’re on the precipice of doing so for a second time in this postseason.

For the first four games of the playoffs, the White Sox have been road warriors, winning four straight contests and holding their opponents to just seven runs in those contests.

Even with those impressive numbers, the team’s pitching staff hasn’t exactly been accumulating wins in a normal way, as they have predominately used openers and bullpen arms to make their way through games.

In fact, that type of bullpen usage is unprecedented.

The White Sox are the first team in MLB history to win 4 straight games in a postseason with their starter going 4 or fewer innings in each of them. They were already the first to win 3. All on the road. Wed in Chicago will be nuts. One win from the ALCS after 3, 100 loss yrs.

According to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers, the White Sox are the first team in MLB history to win four consecutive playoff games without a starting pitcher going for four or more innings in any of the games. In fact, no team had ever won three straight games in that fashion until the White Sox pulled off the feat this season.

Looking up and down the team’s pitching statistics tells the fascinating story. Grant Taylor has been a godsend for the White Sox, pitching 7.2 innings of shutout baseball in the first four games of this postseason. He nailed down a four-inning save in Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Guardians, then got another save in Game 2 as he closed out the contest just two days after that epic performance.

Hagen Smith has pitched 5.2 innings of shutout ball, and Jordan Hicks has pitched four innings in the playoffs, not allowing a single hit and striking out six batters.

As for who will be on the mound for the White Sox in Game 3, manager Will Venable has not yet made that announcement, but the White Sox will have a chance to clinch a postseason series on their home field for the first time since all the way back in 1906 when they face the Guardians on the South Side on Wednesday.

The time for first pitch has not yet been determined.
