Firebugs were causing mayhem in Melbourne overnight.

Two cars were set alight on Greythorn Rd at Balwyn North about 1am on Wednesday.

The blaze spread to a nearby home, where one occupant fled the flames uninjured, Victoria Police said.

Another arson attack was also attempted on the other side of the city less than two hours earlier.

A fruit shop was targeted on Watton St in Werribee about 11.20pm on Tuesday.

“An unknown male was seen reversing a vehicle into the closed shop and attempting to set it alight,” Victoria Police said.

“There was nobody inside at the time and the offender failed to set the vehicle or store on fire.”

“He was seen fleeing in a second vehicle and at this stage no arrests have been made.”

Investigations into both fires are ongoing.
