Acting CEO Barclay Nettlefold has confirmed to Speedcafe the intention to add another co-driver event alongside The Bend 500 and Bathurst 1000.
Such a move would add gravitas to the Enduro Cup, which was run with three events from 2013-19.
The Enduro Cup was canned amid the COVID-19 pandemic and returned last year as part of a calendar shake-up that included a new Sprint Cup and Finals Series.
“We realise the enduros are important and we’d ideally love to do more kilometres and have an extra enduro on the calendar,” Nettlefold told Speedcafe.
“We haven’t finalised it exactly, but we’d like to have an enlarged enduro calendar for next year and beyond.”
It’s currently unclear where the third endurance event would be held, although it’s thought likely to take place in August.
That would mean an earlier finish to the Sprint Cup, which currently accounts for nine of the championship’s 14 rounds.
A logical host for an extra 500km enduro would be Sandown, which is tipped to lose its Finals Series slot to Phillip Island.
Supercars’ plans are of course dependent on negotiations over the Teams Racing Charter that will determine the size of the calendar.
RACE negotiated a deal with a four-man elected panel that has been accepted by seven teams.
It’s understood RACE’s proposed TRC amendments include an increase in the maximum racing kilometres permitted each season.
Nettlefold already has a 14-event calendar approved by the RACE board and expressed confidence the teams will support the plan to return to three enduros.
“The teams are committed to the best interests of the sport. In the majority they’re all fine with it,” he said.
“It’s just more about our calendar structure and getting it right.”
RACE’s planned 2027 calendar is expected to kick-off at Sydney Motorsport Park in late February.
Symmons Plains is tipped to move into the second slot, filling the gap ahead of an Albert Park event that has been pushed back to the first Sunday in April.
