CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brown Men’s Tennis team finished singles play on day one of the ITA Regionals on Friday.

James Lian, Gautam Venkatraman, and Justin Lin all advanced to the main draw tomorrow to join Ivan Sodan, Lucas Kimelman, Robert Yang, Elliot Wasserman, and Tej Bhagra, all of whom automatically qualified. 

In round one, Gautam Venkatraman defeated Michael Malkin from Buffalo, 6-4, 6-4, while Justin Lin also earned a win over Quinnipiac’s Elias Hoxha, 6-3, 6-2. Theo Murphy added a win over Carl Sjoholm from Quinnipiac, 6-1, 6-2, and senior James Lian edged Ivaylo Simeonov of Marist in a three-set thriller, 2-6, 6-2 (14-12). Cole Oberg was topped by Minjae Kim from Buffalo, 6-4, 7-5, and Toby Luo dropped his match against Fairfield’s Rodrigo Garza, 6-3, 7-6(3).

Round two advanced two Bears to the main draw tomorrow. Venkatraman earned a victory over Ethan Hurons from Marist, 7-6(5), 6-2, while Lin also defeated Mars Argun of Siena, 6-3, 6-2. Theo Murphy dropped his match to Dartmouth’s Enrique Collar, 1-6, 7-6, 10-8, and James Lian won against Daniel Baquero of Bryant, 6-2, 6-3. 

In the consolation matches, Cole Oberg earned his victory over Matthew Ground of Fairfield, 7-6, 6-4, while Luo fell to Kunanan Pantaraton from Dartmouth, 6-1, 7-6. 

The Bears will be back in action tomorrow to compete in the main draw in Cambridge.
