Golding set his session-best time on his last lap with a 2:04.6490 to lead Matt Stone Racing’s Jack Le Brocq by 0.1123s.
Team 18 driver Anton De Pasquale was third ahead of Jayden Ojeda (PremiAir Racing) and Cooper Murray (Erebus Motorsport).
Chevrolet threatened to sweep the top four until Golding’s last-gasp lap.
Aaron Cameron (Blanchard Racing Team), Zach Bates (Matt Stone Racing), David Reynolds (Team 18), Broc Feeney (Triple Eight) and Chaz Mostert (Walkinshaw TWG) completed the top 10.
Grove Racing looked like it was keeping its powder dry with Matt Payne and Kai Allen down in 12th and 13th respectively.
Brodie Kostecki pulled up stumps with 20 minutes to go in the session. Dick Johnson Racing confirmed the #17 would undergo an engine change before qualifying.
“Just feels a bit doughy going up the hill,” said Dick Johnson Racing team manager and race engineer Tom Moore.
“The microsectors aren’t that pretty. There’s a lot of red squares on the speedtrap. It’s Bathurst, you don’t leave anything unturned.
“The balance was pretty happy then. He was pretty happy with the car for qualifying, so we’ll take the time now to get hooked into the engine change and get it back on track for qualifying and hopefully it’s a bit quicker in a straight line.”
Qualifying for the Repco Bathurst 1000 gets underway at 4:10pm AEDT.
