Sydney grocery start-up Restore revives traditional doorstep milk run to cut plastic waste

  • October 10, 2026

A Sydney grocery start-up is reviving the humble doorstep milkman, and local shoppers are joining a 1000-strong waitlist to get fresh, plastic-free milk and pantry staples delivered to their homes.

Disruptive grocery business Restore has brought back the traditional Aussie milk run, delivering everything from fresh Tilba Dairy Jersey milk to Pepe Saya butter across the city.

The subscription-based service launched in October 2023 in just 10 local suburbs, but overwhelming demand has seen it expand to cover more than 70 postcodes across New South Wales.

The business is launching into nine additional postcodes this month, with the Cronulla and Sutherland Shire region joining the delivery zone, as it works to clear a growing waitlist of keen residents demanding the service in their suburbs.

Solving a bin night problem

The idea for Restore began on bin night, when founder Dominic Ryan grew increasingly uncomfortable with the amount of single-use plastic accumulating in his household waste, despite his best efforts to shop sustainably.

“I was frustrated by the quality and freshness of supermarket produce, and overwhelmed by the plastic it came packaged in,” Ryan told news.com.au.

“I was living near Luna Park at the time, and every time it rained, the nearby beaches were inundated with plastic food packaging carried by stormwater.”

Ryan was part of a local community group that regularly cleaned those beaches, but the endless wash of rubbish made him realise he needed to tackle the issue at the source.

“It hit me that better produce and less waste are actually the same problem, and the fix is to go back to fresh food delivered in reusable glass, just as the neighbourhood milkman used to do,” he said.

A circular library system

Restore operates a library system in which customers return glass bottles to be sanitised and refilled for reuse.

An impressive 96 per cent of glass bottles are returned by customers, allowing the business to divert 10,000 single-use bottles from being manufactured and from ending up in landfill each month.

The milk is sourced from Tilba Dairy on the NSW South Coast and travels from the dairy to a customer’s doorstep within 36 hours.

Beyond fresh Jersey milk and cream, customers can stock their pantries with Clarendon and West Walla farm-fresh eggs, Sonoma sourdough and croissants, Bilpin Bush Honey, and Flour and Stone toasted muesli.

Connection beyond the screen

Ryan believes the revival of nostalgic doorstep delivery comes down to Sydneysiders craving a genuine connection to their community and their food supply.

“We live so much of our lives through a screen now, and that’s created a hunger for connection with each other and with what we eat,” Ryan said.

“There’s the human side: the same milkman who gets to know your home and your neighbour’s, silently delivering to your doorstep overnight.”

“Supermarkets gave us the convenience of a one-stop shop, but people are starting to question whether that convenience cost them those connections to their community and to the people actually producing their food.”

The evolution of Aussie staple food

Ryan also draws a parallel between the current shift towards farm-fresh milk and the evolution of Australian coffee and bread cultures in recent decades.

Where shoppers once settled for instant coffee powder and sliced white bread, they now prioritise fresh coffee beans, home espresso machines, and artisanal sourdough loaves.

He believes a similar cultural upgrade is underway in daily dairy, as consumers look for higher quality and better traceability.

Aussies embrace the nostalgic ritual

The concept has built a loyal social media following of more than 11,000 users, generating hundreds of comments from locals longing for the return of the milk run.

Many fans praised the concept as a great initiative, while others lamented the lack of the service in their immediate city or state.

For many older Sydneysiders, the service triggered fond childhood memories of the original Aussie doorstep deliveries.

One woman recalled the milkman delivering twice a week in Sydney’s Northern Beaches as a young girl, remembering how her family would wash the glass bottles and leave cash on the doorstep.

Others echoed that nostalgia, missing the old neighbourhood milkman and celebrating the return of fresh, glass-bottled dairy.

The decline of ‘the milko’

The traditional Aussie “milko” phased out gradually between the late 1980s and the 1990s as home refrigeration and supermarket shopping became the norm.

The final blow came with dairy deregulation in the 1990s, which allowed major supermarkets to sell discounted milk and made daily doorstep deliveries financially unviable.

Scaling up for the future

While Restore is currently focused on scaling across New South Wales, Ryan has ambitious plans for the future of grocery shopping.

“We’re a small team tackling a genuinely big problem, and there’s still a lot we’re figuring out, both commercially and logistically,” Ryan said.

“We didn’t start Restore to stay small and safe; we want to change how our city gets its grocery staples.

“By proving the model here, we want to inspire similar businesses in other cities to take up the challenge.”
