Few luxury brands have reinvented themselves as quickly or as convincingly as Genesis. What started as a single concept car in 2003 — and later a production sedan badged as the Hyundai Genesis in 2008 — has grown into a fully independent luxury marque with a compelling lineup, a reputation for quality and comfort, and its own motorsport team. The brand’s trajectory has been steep, and it shows no signs of leveling off.

At the center of Genesis’s most forward-looking ambitions sits the GV60: an all-electric crossover that shares its platform with several stablemates across the Hyundai Group. It is the only Genesis model to share major components with a Hyundai, and that relationship runs deep. The GV60 Magma — the recently introduced performance variant — is effectively Genesis’s answer to Hyundai’s acclaimed Ioniq 5 N.

With a mid-cycle refresh on the way and the Magma variant opening a new performance chapter for the brand, the GV60 is one of the most compelling models in the Genesis stable. Here’s a closer look at what makes it tick.

The Genesis GV60: An Overview

The Genesis GV60 is an electric crossover SUV, first introduced in 2021. It went on sale in North America for the 2023 model year. It slots into the Genesis lineup just below its crossover sibling, the GV70, and holds the distinction of being the first Genesis model to debut a revised version of the brand’s emblem — a visual signal of where the brand is headed.

One of the most notable characteristics of the GV60 is that it’s the brand’s first model to be built on the Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP). This platform was created specifically for electric vehicles, and is also used by other members of the Hyundai family, including the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and the Kia EV6.

The latest addition to the GV60 family is a genuinely exciting one: built with performance as its primary purpose, the GV60 Magma is the first Genesis model to carry the new Magma nameplate. That name is shared with the brand’s recently created motorsport team, making the performance intent clear from the outset. The GV60 Magma backs it up with a host of features designed to make it faster and more rewarding to drive. It was also spotted testing at the Nürburgring ahead of its reveal — a strong signal of the direction Genesis intends to take with this model.

This model is essentially a Genesis counterpart to the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, and shares several of its mechanical features. Like the Ioniq 5 N, it uses a dual-motor, AWD setup; the two electric motors produce the same combined output of 641 hp, propelling the vehicle to 60 mph in less than three and a half seconds. Top speed is just 2 mph above that of the Ioniq 5 N, which reaches a maximum of 162 mph.

The powertrain isn’t the only impressive area of the GV60 Magma: its design also reflects its character, with a lower ride height, fender flares, and forged 21-inch wheels. The front and rear bumpers and the grille have also been given a refresh. A functional front spoiler and rear wing help keep the car planted by generating additional downforce.

The interior is just as sporty as the exterior, with faux suede upholstery decorated with orange and gray contrast stitching. Interior trim is available in a gloss black or dark metallic finish. There is also a smattering of orange in the form of the drive mode and boost buttons, which echo the stitching and the signature “Magma Orange” paint job.

The GV60 Magma is a long-awaited performance model for Genesis, and one that is ushering in what will hopefully be a successful new performance division in the vein of Hyundai’s N.

The GV60’s Relatives In The Hyundai/Kia Family

The version of the E-GMP underpinning the Genesis GV60 is also shared by several other models across the Hyundai Group, spanning both the Hyundai and Kia brands. On the Hyundai side of the family, the Genesis GV60 has common elements with the Ioniq 5, 6, and 9. All three are part of Hyundai’s Ioniq EV sub-brand, which was created to give the automaker’s electric lineup a distinct identity separate from its mainstream models.

The Ioniq 5 is a compact crossover SUV released for the 2022 model year; it was the first vehicle to be marketed under the Ioniq brand. The Ioniq 6, a mid-size fastback sedan, arrived the following year. In late 2024, the Ioniq 9, a three-row mid-size crossover and the third Ioniq vehicle, was introduced for the 2026 model year. The Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6 both have high-performance N versions as part of their lineup, while the Ioniq 9 does not.

For the Kia brand, meanwhile, the GV60’s closest relatives are the EV6 and the EV9. The EV6 compact crossover is Kia’s first dedicated electric vehicle; it made its debut in 2021 for the 2022 model year. The EV9, on the other hand, is a mid-size crossover that went on sale for the 2024 model year and is the second model in Kia’s “EV” range.

The Key To The GV60: The Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform

The use of the E-GMP is what makes the GV60 so unique in the Genesis lineup. As the first model from the luxury sub-brand to ride on this platform, the GV60 is a pioneer for Genesis’s electrification strategy and brings it into closer alignment with the broader Hyundai Group.

The E-GMP was introduced in 2021. It traces its lineage to an earlier Hyundai concept called the “Power Electric System,” which packaged an EV’s motor, battery, and electronics together. The original PE system used a separate motor and inverter connected by a cable; the second generation integrated the two into a single unit, eliminating those cables and connectors. The third generation went further still — combining motor, transmission, and inverter into one compact assembly — and that evolution ultimately became the E-GMP.

Hyundai confirmed it was working on a dedicated EV platform in 2017, but it wasn’t until four years later that the E-GMP debuted in its current form. The platform is available in multiple architectures (800 V and 400 V) and motor layouts, including front-motor, rear-motor, and dual-motor configurations.

The platform is currently used across a total of nine Hyundai, Genesis, and Kia models. The Hyundai Group has plans to introduce 23 battery electric vehicles based on the E-GMP, including 11 exclusively electric models. The GV60 is carrying the Genesis brand into the future and driving its electrification strategy forward. Alongside its Magma sibling — which has opened up an entirely new world of performance for the brand — it represents the most compelling preview yet of what Genesis has in store over the next few years.
