Second straight top 10 for van Gisbergen at Charlotte Shane van Gisbergen in the #97 Trackhouse Racing Chevrolet Camaro at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Chase Briscoe beat his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate Christopher Bell for his second straight win in a thrilling finish to the 267-lapper.

Coming to the white flag, half a second split Briscoe and Bell. The race leader had to contend with traffic.

Briscoe went high while Bell went low entering the final turn. Despite getting sideways, Bell got alongside Briscoe and they banged doors coming to the chequered flag.

It’s the closest finish of any NASCAR Cup Series race so far this season.

The win was even more remarkable for Briscoe who reported his right front tyre was deflating in the closing laps.

“When I got that final pack of lapped cars with five or six to go, I just felt like I was going to knock the wall down at any point. It just quit turning,” said Briscoe.

“I don’t know what it is about these finishes. I’ve got to quit making it so excited at the end.”

Third went to Ryan Blaney (#12 Team Penske Ford Mustang while Josh Berr (#21 Wood Brothers Racing Mustang) and Denny Hamlin (#11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry) completed the top five.

“Great job guys,” van Gisbergen radioed after taking the chequered flag in seventh behind Kyle Larson (#5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro).

“That was an awesome good job making the car better.”

The starting order was set by the metric after qualifying was rained out, which put Kyle Larson on pole position and van Gisbergen in 10th.

Larson led until Lap 36 when the competition caution came out, prompting the field to pit. In that time, van Gisbergen slipped to 14th.

Sixth-placed Denny Hamlin (#11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry) was stung for a safety violation when the team lost control of a tyre, which wandered into Trackhouse Racing’s pit stall.

Eighth-placed Ryan Blaney in the #12 Team Penske Ford Mustang was pinged for speeding.

Racing resumed on Lap 41. Ty Gibbs (#54 Joe Gibbs Racing Camry) slid up into the wall on the restart and then spun a lap later to bring out the caution on Lap 42.

An unfortunate casualty in the incident was Brad Keselowski (#6 RFK Racing Ford Mustang) who spun in avoidance.

After a short yellow, the race went green on Lap 47. Bubba Wallace (#23 23XI Racing Camry) who restarted third vaulted to the lead, though that only lasted until Lap 59 when Larson retook top spot.

On Lap 77, Alex Bowman’s #48 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro snapped loose and shot up the track into the path of Wallace. That brought a premature end to Stage 1, which was won by Larson.

The top 10 was completed by Chase Briscoe, Christopher Bell, Austin Cindric, Tyler Reddick, Daniel Suarez, Corey Heim, Carson Hocevar, Chris Buescher and Ryan Blaney. SVG was 27th.

Larson retained his lead after the stage break pit stops and took the green flag on Lap 87 but by Lap 108 lost the lead to Bell (#20 Joe Gibbs Racing Camry).

John Hunter Nemechek (#42 Legacy Motor Club Camry) spun on Lap 117 to bring out the caution, prompting another round of pit stops.

Having recovered from his earlier pit stop misdemeanour, Hamlin found himself in strife with Larson on Lap 124 when the pair made nose-to-tail contact, which sent the #5 Hendrick Motorsports Camaro up the road and down to seventh.

Stage 2 ended on Lap 166 led by Bell, followed by Blaney, Hamlin Larson, Tyler Reddick, Cindric, Briscoe, Josh Berry, Chase Elliott and Carson Hocevar. SVG finished the stage 13th.

Stage 3 started on Lap 173 with Bell in charge. He continued to control proceedings while Briscoe made headway to second.

On Lap 206, Reddick got loose coming out of Turn 2 and cut across the nose of Gray Gaulding (#66 Garage 66 Mustang), sending the NASCAR wildcard into a spin.

The race went back to green on Lap 211. Second-placed Briscoe got the jump on Bell and took the lead. Van Gisbergen, meanwhile, restarted ninth.

Briscoe controlled the contest until the last lap when he came upon traffic and Bell’s late surge, only to come up 0.029s short.
