DJR makes call on Kostecki engineer for Gold Coast George Commins with Brodie Kostecki. Image: Richard Gresham

Moore stepped into the role at the Bathurst 1000 after Kostecki’s long-time running mate Commins fractured his pelvis in the days before the Great Race.

The high-profile absence did not stop Kostecki and co-driver Todd Hazelwood from taking DJR’s first Bathurst victory in seven years.

DJR hopes to have Sunshine Coast-based Commins trackside in Surfers Paradise as part of its performance personnel staff.

However, Moore will retain the primary engineer role – including being on the radio to Kostecki during sessions – to ensure the weekend goes smoothly.

“[Commins is] doing really well,” DJR co-owner Ryan Story said on the team’s PG and the Doc podcast.

“We’re really hoping he can be with us on the Gold Coast but we don’t want to put any pressure on him.

“To have him as part of the brains trust for the Gold Coast weekend adds to our group.

“We’re going to have continuity from how we ran at Bathurst in that Tom will still be running the car and on the radio to Brodie.

“That’s to maximise the opportunity for George to come back, not have the pressure, if he has fatigue or isn’t doing that flash and needs to go back to the hotel for any reason at all, it’s not going to disrupt what we’re doing.

“And it allows him to ease back in, but that’s a decision we’ve made in the lead-up to the race weekend.”

Story also paid tribute to the preparation work Commins had undertaken ahead of Bathurst that helped set up the team’s weekend.

“George is such an important part of this place,” he said.

“He’s a daredevil bloody sportsman, it’s like he’s trying to audition for the X-Games or something and had a prang on his mountain bike.

“To not have George there was tough and we felt for him too, the poor bugger was in a fair bit of strife.”

Commins engineered Kostecki throughout the driver’s first three Supercars seasons at Erebus Motorsport before the pair, and Moore, moved to DJR for 2025.
