Sony Interactive Entertainment has received a patent for a technique called Generation Super Sampling. As TechSpot explains, it generates the next game frame based on the previous image and the player’s commands, without waiting for the GPU to finish rendering.
The system uses a neural network with an encoder and a decoder. The encoder converts a completed frame into a compact dataset, and the decoder uses it to attempt to create the next image. For more accurate prediction, the system can also use motion vectors and inputs from a controller, mouse, joystick, or motion sensors.
For example, pressing the jump button tells the neural network how the scene might change in the next moment. The generated frame can be displayed even before the GPU finishes rendering the actual one.
This approach differs from conventional frame generation. Technologies like DLSS 3 create an intermediate image based on two already-rendered frames, which can increase latency. Sony’s development attempts to predict the next frame, so in theory, it can improve smoothness without this drawback.
The patent also describes a simpler mode that does not use a neural network. It shifts individual blocks of pixels according to motion vectors and can be used when a device lacks the computational power for a full-fledged AI model.
Sony filed the initial application in December 2023 and was granted a U.S. patent on September 29, 2026. A new related application, published on October 15, describes the technology’s implementation options in greater detail.
The documents do not include test results, so it is currently unknown how accurately the system predicts complex scenes or what happens after an incorrect prediction. Sony also does not link the development to the PlayStation 6 or any other specific device. A patent does not guarantee the technology will appear in a mass-produced console.
Previously, Sony added the QSSR AI upscaler, which is a simplified version of the PSSR found in the PlayStation 5 Pro. The company also patented a “soft pause”, during which AI can temporarily control a character instead of the player.
