At Clontarf House by Mathieson Architects, large glazed openings connect the living spaces with Middle Harbour. Maintaining the harbour outlook was central to the shading strategy, with solar control and the demands of the coastal environment addressed without introducing visual clutter.

Shade Factor collaborated with the architects from an early stage to integrate the shading systems into the architecture. Fixing details for the large spans were resolved within the facade, while internal shading was concealed within the ceiling plane.

Blindspace concealment systems house roller blinds within flush-mounted cassettes throughout the living spaces, billiards room, bedrooms and bathrooms. TrackTrim recessed curtain tracks set drapery within the ceiling line, keeping tracks and hardware out of view. When not in use, the shading leaves the glazing and views unobstructed.

Outside, three Warema Terrea K70 motorised folding-arm awnings extend the living areas into the courtyard and waterfront terrace. The awnings project up to three metres and retract completely when not required. Their integrated valances and concealed fixing details maintain the restrained expression of the facade.

The result is a shading strategy that sits within the architecture. With the components concealed and the systems resolved as part of the design, the project retains its focus on the waterfront setting, natural light and connection between interior and exterior spaces.
