Daisy Ridley is headed back to the sea. Ridley is set to star in a Paramount+ adaptation of the sci-fi story Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea, Deadline and Variety reported on Wednesday. The remake will be based on Irwin Allen’s 1961 disaster movie and the ABC spin-off series he created. Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea also spawned a novelization published in 1961. Matt Shakman (WandaVision) will direct the series, and Akiva Goldsman (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, The Crowded Room) will write and serve as executive producer. Legendary TV and the Irwin Allen estate will produce the show, and Ridley will serve as executive producer. According to Variety, the eight-episode series was in development for months before the Warner Bros./Paramount merger closed.

Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea centers on Lee Crane, the commanding officer of the nuclear submarine Seaview. In sci-fi disaster fashion, the adventure goes off the rails, from a meteor shower to a fight against a giant squid. Per Variety, Ridley’s version of Lee is a scientist who “is pulled into a classified government program after a catastrophic Arctic expedition claims the life of her twin sister.” The rest of the logline reads: “At the center of the program is the USS Seaview, a retro-futuristic submarine found entombed in the ice, marked with symbols from a history that shouldn’t exist, and it powers up only when Lee steps aboard. Thrust into command of a pressure-cooker crew and an uneasy alliance with government power brokers, Lee leads Seaview on daring undersea missions to contain mysterious forces leaking into our world, all while uncovering a hidden truth about the oceans, an erased chapter of human history and the once-thought mythical city of Atlantis.” So, until Ridley reprises her role as Rey, you can see her potentially battling a squid instead.
