MEDOWIE Rugby Club stalwart Sam Holbert embodies all the traits of a forward leader.

A power running back rower and no-nonsense defender who leads by example, the teak-tough campaigner has proved an asset to the Marauders throughout the past two decades.

‘Slamming Sam’ has only ever pulled on the Medowie Marauders jumper throughout his rugby journey – proudly representing the club from juniors through to the senior ranks in the Hunter Suburban Rugby competitions.

The loyal Holbert joined a select band recently when he was bestowed with life membership of the Medowie club.

As the longest serving Marauders player, with over 250 games under his belt, Trojan Sam has certainly earned his place in Medowie Rugby’s Hall of Fame.

He holds a special place in the club’s history as a quality player and leader and has packed down with Marauders’ legends like Gary Menchin, Aaron Taggart, Steve Bailey, Dave Morley, Whoppa, Boof, Luke Menchin and played under top coaches Stan McManus, Dwayne Murphy, Bodge and Mark Underwood.

During his career, Sam has been able to play alongside his three brothers Jon, Ben and Alex – a satisfying achievement –  and has also given back to the club in a leadership role by serving the Marauders in the role of President these past three seasons.

Sam has now stepped down from the position, welcoming new blood and a new chapter for the club under incoming President Jake Lightbody.

While Sam may not be the oldest player currently taking the field in a Medowie jumper, one thing has never changed  – his passion for the game and loyalty to the club.

Holbert’s life membership recognises his many years of dedication, commitment and sterling service – a mighty contribution he can be proud of.

Sam was a vital cog for the Marauders team this season that clinched the Hunter Suburban Rugby B Grade Patrons Shield minor premiership and finished runners-up to Easts after a heart-breaking 18-17 grand final loss at Newcastle’s No 2 Sportsground.

He will saddle up for another season in 2027 with his beloved Marauders under the coaching of Hayden Thompson and John McManus.
