Ivan Gnizditskiy came into the UFC through the side door. Two Contender Series bookings fell apart without him ever setting foot in the APEX cage, and the second one handed a career-making night to the man who replaced him. The UFC signed the Russian Light Heavyweight anyway, on the back of a pro record built entirely on finishes.
The Lowdown
Born in the Western Siberian oil town of Urai, he fights out of Tyumen under the nickname “Samurai”. He stands 6ft 1in and competes at 205lb. When the UFC came calling he was 7-0 as a professional, with six wins by knockout, one by submission and no trips to the scorecards. He holds a Ural Federal District pankration title, scored two first-round stoppages in ONE Championship and has picked up a bare-knuckle win on the side. His UFC debut is set for 5 December against Uran Satybaldiev at UFC Saudi Arabia.
From Urai to the Old City of Chingi-Tura
Gnizditskiy was born in Urai and has lived and trained in Tyumen for years. Urai sits in the Khanty-Mansi region, deep in oil country. Tyumen is the regional hub to the south, and that is where he became a fighter.
His team is Chingi-Tura, named after the old Tatar town that stood on the site of modern Tyumen.
Before the pro run took shape, he made his name in pankration, winning the Ural Federal District championship. Pankration blends striking and grappling, and the same mix runs through his pro record.
One Fight, Then a Five-Year Gap
His pro debut came on 10 June 2018 at a regional tournament in Valuyki, near the Ukrainian border, and ended in a first-round TKO of Maksim Navrazhniy.
He did not fight again as a professional for nearly five years.
He returned in May 2023 and stopped Baganaev with knees and punches in the second round. From that point on, the pace picked up sharply.
The Night He Borrowed From Chimaev
RCC 18 landed in Tyumen on 24 February 2024 and packed out the Tsentralny arena. Gnizditskiy was on the card against Andrey Stolnik, and his build-up was a mess. He spent the week before the fight sick with a fever, laid up and watching old bouts.
One of them was Khamzat Chimaev submitting Kevin Holland with a first-round D’Arce choke at UFC 279. Something clicked. Gnizditskiy decided he wanted a submission of his own.
He submitted Stolnik in 1:45 of the opening round. Afterwards he told the regional sports outlet Tyumen Arena that he had never specifically drilled the submission he used and had simply worked through it step by step in his head. It remains the only submission win on his record.
China, Bare Knuckles and No Camp
In October 2024 he travelled to China for the Happy Elephant MMA Champions League and stopped Liu Ce with punches at 1:55 of the second round.
A few weeks later he was back home in Tyumen, this time without gloves. RCC brought its bare-knuckle brand, RCC Hard, to the city for a sold-out show, and Gnizditskiy beat Adel Zaripov. He admitted afterwards there had been no preparation at all. He was still nursing a knock from the China trip and fought anyway.
His explanation was simple. MMA was the main direction, but he would show up anywhere that gave him a chance to prove himself.
Two Trips to Bangkok, Under Seven Minutes of Work
The ONE Championship call came in 2025. On 7 March, at ONE Friday Fights 99 inside Lumpinee Stadium, he faced American Kevin Church, a physically strong opponent who leaned on his wrestling. Gnizditskiy had promised a first-round finish before the walkout.
He delivered at 2:46. A clean left hook buckled Church, and the follow-up punches did the rest.
He credited the team behind him, pointing to a serious camp that brought in training partners from St Petersburg. Bangkok was not new territory either. He had already worked those Friday night cards as a cornerman for Chingi-Tura teammate Valmir Galiev.
The return trip came on 30 May 2025 at ONE Friday Fights 110. Khurshidbek Bozarboev lasted until 3:54 of the first round before the punches stopped the fight. Across two ONE appearances, Gnizditskiy logged six minutes and 40 seconds of cage time.
Contender Series, Twice Denied
The obvious next step was Dana White’s Contender Series. He was booked for it twice and fought on neither card.
He was first booked to face Felipe Franco at the Season 9 event on 9 September 2025, but withdrew before fight night. Franco ended up facing a different opponent.
Gnizditskiy went back to Tyumen and kept busy. On 28 March 2026 he stopped Tursunbek Sodikov in 1:43 of the first round at a Chingi-Tura show, the seventh win on his ledger.
Season 10 brought a second booking, this time against unbeaten Cage Warriors product Nell Ariano on 6 October 2026. Visa issues pulled Gnizditskiy out. Preston LaGrange took the fight on short notice, moved up from Middleweight and knocked Ariano out in 2:24 to earn a UFC contract as a heavy underdog.
For a little over a week, it looked like Gnizditskiy had watched someone else cash his ticket.
Signed Without the Audition
The UFC had other ideas. In mid-October 2026, manager Ali Askarov of Crown Sports Management confirmed that the UFC had signed Gnizditskiy directly, no Contender Series win required.
The first UFC assignment is a real one. Satybaldiev is a Kyrgyz Light Heavyweight nicknamed “Gorilla”, a former LFA champion who trains at Team Alpha Male and already has Octagon experience. He stands 6ft 4in and submitted Diyar Nurgozhay with a rare Ezekiel choke at UFC Shanghai.
Eight years after his pro debut, and with two Contender Series bookings behind him, he finally gets his walk to the Octagon.
