The Greek basketball scandal continues to widen as authorities investigate seven more referees for alleged game manipulation. Three of the newly implicated officials have officiated in Greece’s top tier, adding to a case that already involves several former and active EuroLeague referees.

The Greek basketball scandal has another development that reportedly involves even more referees.

A report by Greek television station Star, via Athletiko, has revealed that authorities are investigating a new group of seven referees.

They are set to be called in to provide explanations in the coming days for their alleged involvement in the manipulation of basketball games.

Three out of the seven referees have officiated in the highest-tier Greek league.

Alongside this, Greece’s Anti-Money Laundering Authority is conducting their own separate investigation with five people involved.

EuroLeague referees involved in Greek basketball scandal

The Greek scandal that started because of the arrest warrants issued to six people accused of match-fixing and bribery is continuing to involve more referees with three of the six initial people being recent EuroLeague refs.

Ilias Koromilas, Petros Papapetrou, and Vasiliki Tsaroucha all officiated EuroLeague games during parts of the broader 2018-2026 period and are reportedly being examined by Greek authorities, while Tasos Piloidis is another person involved who worked in the competition earlier in his career.

Tsaroucha was the only referee that had been working in the EuroLeague ecosystem right up until the scandal started. She was suspended by the EuroLeague right after being arrested in Greece.

This situation has caused major ripples in Greek basketball with the Greek Basketball Federation’s president stepping down due to his involvement and a new president being elected.
