Major upgrades to prepare the Kingsway Regional Sporting Complex as a training base for the upcoming Men’s Rugby World Cup in late 2027 have started.
A sod-turning ceremony was held last Friday in Madeley to mark the start of works.
Teams competing in the World Cup are expected to use the venue during the tournament’s initial three pool phases.
The upgrades are also expected to support the Wanneroo Rugby Union Club’s operations by delivering four new changerooms on the western side of the pavilion to encourage female rugby participation and high-performance training.
City of Wanneroo mayor Linda Aitken said the redevelopment would deliver modern and inclusive facilities to support the continued growth of rugby in the area.
“With more than 40 per cent of our residents born overseas, it is only fitting our multicultural city plays a role in this global event,” she said.
“No matter which teams are based at Kingsway during the World Cup, I am confident their players, staff and supporters will receive a warm welcome and enjoy everything our local community has to offer.”
The project is supported by $3 million from the State Government and the Rugby World Cup 2027 Legacy Program.
The construction of the new changerooms is expected to be completed in June 2027, with more upgrades to follow.
More than 250,000 international visitors are expected to travel to Australia for the tournament.
