A 22-year-old man who allegedly obtained explosives in preparation for a terrorist act has appeared in Perth Magistrates Court.

Lucas Shawn Cameron allegedly conducted online research, engaged in conversations about attack methods, and obtained a machete in November and December last year, the court heard.

Police allege he sought help on a messaging platform about “explosive devices, military and tactical training, education, weapons manufacturing, combat techniques and fake documents” as part of planning for a terrorist attack.

The bearded 22-year-old appeared in court via video link from custody and when asked by Magistrate Ben Tyers if he understood the charge, said he did.

Extremist material

Mr Cameron was already facing multiple terrorism-related charges, but three of those have been discontinued.

He is now charged with doing an act in preparation for a terrorist act, possessing violent extremist material and accessing violent extremist material.

Mr Cameron was first arrested after federal police raided his house in the northern Perth suburb of Westminster and seized two computers and a mobile phone.

Details of the alleged plot are not yet known.

Mr Cameron is scheduled to appear in Stirling Gardens Magistrates Court again on November 11.
