The Detroit Red Wings appear willing to take their time to get a Dylan Larkin deal done, and seem equally patient when it comes to Simon Edvinsson’s situation.
TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger said in Thursday’s edition of Insider Trading that it sounds as if the Red Wings are willing to wait until Dec. 1, which is the cutoff Edvinsson must have a contract by if he’s eligible to play this season.
The 23-year-old defenceman is a restricted free agent and would be ineligible to play in the NHL in 2026-27 if not signed by Dec. 1. However, Dreger notes waiting that long carries some risk of things not materializing on a trade or contract front.
“The Red Wings have offered contracts to date of one year, two years, five years, and seven years, but clearly the money isn’t there. The San Jose Sharks are most definitely interested in Simon Edvinsson, and there are upwards of 10 teams interested in this 23-year-old defenceman,” Dreger said Thursday.
“I think both Larkin and Edvinsson are thinking, ‘hey, Shawn Horcoff, you’ve got at least 10 teams interested in each of us. There’s got to be a deal there.’ And conversely, the Red Wings are going, we’re not making a bad deal for either player.”
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun reported on last Tuesday’s edition of Insider Trading that Edvinsson’s camp and Horcoff, the team’s interim general manager, recently met to “lay their cards on the table.”
Horcoff has previously stated the team’s goal is to sign Edvinsson as opposed to trading him. However, the Red Wings have had talks with up to 10 interested teams, which included the San Jose Sharks and the Boston Bruins as of last week.
Edvinsson scored nine goals with 25 points in 72 regular-season games in 2025-26. He is coming off his three-year, entry-level contract.
Internationally, he helped Sweden win bronze medals at the U18s, World Juniors and World Championship.
In 175 career NHL games, the Onsala, Sweden native has scored 19 goals and 60 points.
The Edvinsson situation is one of two major sagas on Horcoff’s plate after he took over as interim GM last month, replacing franchise icon Steve Yzerman. Things escalated on Thursday between the club and disgruntled former captain Larkin, who said he would no longer play for the Red Wings after originally submitting a trade request in the spring.
“Dylan’s had enough of the situation,“ Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, said in a statement. ”We believe he’s been very professional and cooperative through this process.”
The Red Wings later suspended Larkin and said they were “disappointed by his decision.”
