Oscar Piastri has been stripped of his points haul in the Mexico City Grand Prix after a severe 10-second post-race penalty.
The Australian had crossed the line in seventh place, but was placed under investigation for a late collision with the Racing Bulls machine of Arvid Lindblad at Turn 1 and 2.
Piastri attempted to move around the outside of Turn 1 to grab the inside of Turn 2, but collected the left-rear of Lindblad’s car, destroying it and sending him in the barriers, with the safety car being deployed – with the McLaren suffering severe sidepod and bargeboard damage.
Ultimately, Piastri crossed the line 19.475s behind winner Max Verstappen, but was handed a 10-second penalty by the stewards – dropping him from seventh to 15th in the results.
Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, and Pierre Gasly all move up one place, with Gabriel Bortoleto moving into the points in P10.
However, Colapinto and Gasly are being investigated for an alleged yellow flag infringement, and could yet lose their points.
In their verdict, the stewards found that Piastri was “never fully alongside” Lindblad, “so was not able to claim the right to the corner.”
It was found that Piastri “could have avoided the collision if he had moved further to the left after Turn 1, even if this involved leaving the track prior to Turn 2.”
