The coach who helped Union Bordeaux Begles defeat Leinster Rugby in the 2026 Investec Champions Cup Final is now heading to Dublin to lead the team he beat.
Leinster confirmed Tuesday, Nov. 3, that Noel McNamara will replace Leo Cullen as head coach on July 1, 2027, bringing the Irish coach back to his former club after helping Bordeaux capture consecutive European championships.
The 43-year-old Clare native currently serves as attack coach under Yannick Bru at Union Bordeaux, where his work has helped transform the French club into one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking teams.
If You Can’t Beat Them, Hire Their Coach
Leinster got a firsthand look at Noel McNamara’s attacking credentials in the 2026 Investec Champions Cup Final, when Union Bordeaux Begles dismantled the Irish powerhouse 41-19 in Bilbao.
Bordeaux’s attack, featuring FloRugby’s No. 1-ranked player in the world, Louis Bielle-Biarrey, overwhelmed Leinster on its way to a second consecutive European championship.
Now, the coach who helped build that attack is heading to Dublin.
For a Leinster side that hasn’t lifted the Champions Cup since 2018, hiring someone who knows both the club and how to beat it makes plenty of sense.
How Noel McNamara Transformed Bordeaux’s Attack
McNamara joined Bordeaux in 2023, bringing experience from Leinster, Ireland‘s youth system and the Hollywoodbets Sharks in South Africa.
The impact on Bordeaux’s attack has been remarkable.
Union Bordeaux scored 63 tries in the season before McNamara arrived. That number jumped to 124 in his first campaign and 152 the following season.
For Bordeaux, McNamara’s departure represents a significant loss. The French club had extended his contract through 2029 before agreeing to release him at the end of the 2026-27 season.
UBB credited his expertise and commitment to the club’s attacking success, including its back-to-back European championships.
Replacing that influence will be an important challenge for head coach Yannick Bru as Union Bordeaux looks to maintain its place among Europe’s elite.
McNamara’s Previous Leinster And Ireland Coaching Experience
For McNamara, the appointment represents a homecoming.
He previously spent five years with Leinster between 2016 and 2021, holding roles including academy manager and Leinster ‘A’ head coach.
He also guided Ireland U20 Rugby team to a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2019 before spending two years coaching the Hollywoodbets Sharks in Durban.
His combination of player-development experience and European success helped make him Leinster‘s preferred candidate.
Leinster CEO Shane Nolan said McNamara’s previous connection to the club played an important role in the decision.
“Noel has a long association with the club and emerged as our preferred candidate very early in the process,” Nolan said.
When Will McNamara Replace Leo Cullen At Leinster?
McNamara will officially take charge July 1, 2027, after completing the 2026-27 season with Union Bordeaux Begles.
The French club agreed to release him despite previously extending his contract through 2029.
Cullen will step down after 12 seasons as Leinster head coach, having won six league championships and the 2018 European Champions Cup.
His final season offers one last opportunity to end Leinster’s European title drought before McNamara begins a new chapter in Dublin.
