The UK version of Married At First Sight UK has been cancelled after explosive rape allegations rocked the highly popular series.

The show’s cancellation comes after a BBC Panorama investigation in which two of the female contestants claimed they were raped.

The show, created by production company CLP, was aired on Channel 4 – who launched an external review following the Panorama episode.

In the Panorama show, one woman alleged she was raped by her onscreen husband and threatened with an acid attack.

The other alleged she was raped by her onscreen husband and then complained to Channel 4 and production company CLP. Despite her allegations, her episodes were still aired.

A third woman accused her onscreen husband of sexual misconduct.

One man was arrested after the Panorama show aired but was released on bail while investigations continue, according to the Met Police.

The men have all denied the allegations.

Channel 4, chief executive Priya Dogra, said on Thursday that the show’s budget would be redirected into new programming.

She also apologised to the women who had complained for the “distress they have clearly felt”.

The women said they felt the duty of care around the show fell short.

Channel 4 launched an external review which found that CLP did have Ofcom-compliant safeguarding processes but had fallen short of them.

UK media watchdog Ofcom has also launched an investigation into the series.
