Scottie Scheffler’s trusted caddie Ted Scott stepped away from his man during the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship two weeks ago and was missing again last week during Scheffler’s victory at the BMW Championship.
On Sunday, during what he’s called his Sunday Sermon on Instagram, Scott shed more light on what it was that kept him from being able to caddie.
“Many of you know that I left the St. Jude Classic early and didn’t caddie on Sunday. Why? Because we had a devastating family emergency, probably the hardest thing I’ve ever walked through in my entire life,” Scott said.
“What are some things that God has taught me through all of this? Things that can help you? First of all, we’re helpless. I truly can’t help the situation, watching my family grieve, watching the person that was injured. It’s just really difficult to go through. And I’m helpless, but I’m not hopeless.
“I can’t understand what happened, I can’t understand what’s going on, but I am starting to find peace.”
The injury happened to Scott’s 10-year-old nephew Joel. It is not clear what happened or how he is doing now. Players at East Lake were wearing yellow ribbons to support Scott and his family.
Scheffler shot a final-round 68 to tie for fourth place during another historic, five-win season that included two major championship titles.
