A blazing diplomatic row between France and New Zealand broke out, while police hunted those responsible for the attack.
The French government later admitted it had authorised a team of agents from its secret service, the DGSE, to carry out the attack. Two of the agents who were caught, Alain Mafart and Dominique Prieur, were sentenced in New Zealand to 10 years in prison.
