Kyogle mayor Danielle Mulholland let people know through social media that she is dealing with a cancer diagnosis.

She said she felt a duty to keep residents informed about certain things — no matter how uncomfortable.

“As most of you know, I am a private person, particularly when it comes to health,” Ms Mulholland said.

“While in hospital for a routine back tune-up, I asked about a lump I had previously had ultrasounded and MRI-scanned.

“I’d been told it was likely an infection from my sinuses. However, a biopsy revealed it was tonsil cancer that had metastasised into my lymph nodes, salivary glands, and surrounding tissue.”

Ms Mulholland was promptly transferred to John Flynn Hospital in Queensland where she will undergo seven weeks of combined chemo and radiation therapy, starting today, Tuesday, August 26.

“While that may not sound delightful, the good news is that the cancer is contained (just not enough to simply remove it surgically), it was caught relatively early, and my prognosis is positive,” she said.

Deputy mayor John Burley will step in as acting mayor.

“The C-word is often met with horror, concern, and uncertainty. I’m taking my oncologist’s advice to heart and focusing on the fact that I will be back, fighting fit, before long. Fortunately, cancer is no longer the death sentence it used to be,” Ms Mulholland said.

“For those who know me, you know I will not go quietly into the night – I am too scrappy for that.”

Fighting words from Kyogle’s mayor who is in her third term as mayor.
