Thanks to a round of golf, Roger Clemens has the president of the United States pushing for him to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
On Sunday, President Donald Trump took to social media to write that the Boston Red Sox legend “should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, NOW!”
Clemens, who started his career with a 13-season run in Boston, was one of the most dominant and successful pitchers in MLB history. However, long-running accusations of steroid usage have marred his career and are viewed as the main reason voters have denied him entry to Cooperstown.
Clemens received 65.2% of votes in his final year on the Hall of Fame ballot in 2022. Players need to receive 75% of votes to be inducted and are allowed only 10 years on the BBWAA ballot. However, players can be inducted later through a committee.
A seven-time Cy Young Award winner and 11-time All-Star, Clemens won 354 games during his career, the ninth-most in MLB history. He also ranks third all-time in strikeouts (4,672) behind Nolan Ryan and Randy Johnson. (Oddly, President Trump claimed Clemens was second in career strikeouts behind Ryan in his post.)
Clemens took to social media to thank President Trump for his endorsement, making references to “fake news.”
“I appreciate the love! DT knows more than anyone the fake news that’s out there,” Clemens wrote. “Everyone has their agendas… I played the game to change my family’s direction generationally and to WIN!”
Clemens pitched 24 seasons in the majors. After his 13 years in Boston, he spent two years with the Toronto Blue Jays, six seasons with the New York Yankees and three seasons with the Houston Astros.
Here’s the full message from President Trump as posted to Truth Social:
“I played Golf yesterday with the Great Roger Clemens and his son, Kacy. Roger Clemens was easily one of the few Greatest Pitchers of All Time, winning 354 Games, the Cy Young Award seven times (A Record, by a lot!), and played in six World Series, winning two! He was second to Nolan Ryan in most strike-outs, and he should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame, NOW! People think he took drugs, but nothing was proven. He never tested positive, and Roger, from the very beginning, totally denies it. He was just as great before those erroneous charges were leveled at him. That rumor has gone on for years, and there has been no evidence whatsoever that he was a “druggie.” This is going to be like Pete Rose where, after over 4,000 Hits, they wouldn’t put him in the Hall of Fame until I spoke to the Commissioner, and he promised to do so, but it was essentially a promise not kept because he only ‘opened it up’ when Pete died and, even then, he said that Pete Rose only got into the mix because of DEATH. We are not going to let that happen in the case of Roger Clemens. 354 Wins — Put him in NOW. He and his great family should not be forced to endure this “stupidity” any longer!”
