With 53-man rosters due this Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills made the tough decision to cut the son of a five-time Pro Bowl running back Frank Gore.

After going undrafted in 2024, Southern Miss running back Frank Gore Jr. signed with the Bills. The son of San Francisco 49ers legend Frank Gore earned All-Sun Belt honors three times during his collegiate career, rushing for 4,022 yards and 26 touchdowns. He also had 75 receptions for 692 yards and four scores.

The Bills kept Gore on their practice squad after a strong 2024 preseason. He was even better this summer, racking up 104 rushing yard and 109 receiving yards in three games.

Gore was actually the only NFL player this preseason to go over 100 yards in rushing and receiving. Despite how well he played this August, he was waived by the Bills.

NFL fans aren’t shocked by Buffalo’s decision.

Even though Gore played well this preseason, he faced an uphill climb to make the roster. That’s because he was on a depth chart that features James Cook, Ray Davis and Ty Johnson.

“Expected, but an absolute steal if he lands on the practice squad. Active roster talent,” Tyler Smith of Chat Sports said.

“He will get picked up for sure,” a fan said.

“Not surprising,” a Bills fan wrote on X. I know he’ll prob end on the PS but really hope somebody claims him and lets him play some damn ball!

Could Gore follow in his father’s footsteps?

Now that Gore has been waived by the Bills, there’s a chance he could end up playing for his father’s former team. After all, the 49ers made space on their depth chart by cutting veteran tailback Jeff Wilson Jr. this Tuesday.

The issue for Gore is that San Francisco already has three capable running backs in Christian McCaffrey, Brian Robinson Jr. and Isaac Guerendo. It’s unlikely he’d receive playing time.

Hopefully, Gore will land on a team that’s in desperate need of a young running back. That would give him the best chance to showcase his skills this season.
