Mercedes-AMG, with help from its Formula 1 driver George Russell, has shattered a number of electric vehicle world records as the Concept AMG GT XX was piloted on Italy’s Nardo test track.
During this behemoth test run, the Concept AMG GT XX, seen at Silverstone earlier this year, shattered a number of long-distance records. For one, it covered 5479 kilometres (3404 miles) in just 24 hours as Mercedes fought for its ‘around the world in eight days’ challenge, beating the previous record of 3961km.
To prove the potential of its technology, two identical models travelled a total of 40,075km (24,901 miles) in seven days, 13 hours, 24 minutes and seven seconds. While the car stopped 40 times for ultra-fast charging throughout the record attempt, it maintained a speed of 300km/h (186mph), a speed chosen specifically as optimal for the challenge.
The concept car features three axial flux motors, capable of generating over 1000kW (1360 horsepower) of peak power. Two sit on the rear axle, while one sits on the front axle, waiting for its moment to boost the car in specific moments depending on driving style.
Russell was one of a number of drivers taking part in the challenge and came away impressed by the technology.
“As an F1 driver, I’m used to pushing technology to its absolute limits – the Concept AMG GT XX really impressed me,” he said. “The axial flux motors respond as immediately and precisely as a Formula 1 drivetrain, but with an endurance that I have only ever experienced with combustion engines.
“This technology will revolutionise the driving experience – both on the racetrack and on the road.”
Mercedes’ chief technology officer, Markus Schäfer, added, “In the 1970s and 1980s, Mercedes‑Benz was a regular guest here at Nardò, setting numerous international speed and track records – most notably with the C111 as a visionary technology programme. Back then, we demonstrated the performance capabilities of innovative diesel and petrol powertrains.
“Now, with the CONCEPT AMG GT XX technology programme, we are entering a new dimension of performance – this time with fully electric drive. The goal is to redefine the limits of what is technically possible in the age of electric drives. So what could be more fitting than to go chasing records once again?”
