Kevin Walters has spoken about the size of challenge that awaits new Gold Coast Titans head coach, Josh Hannay, likening it to his own arrival at the rock bottom Brisbane Broncos in 2021.

In three years, Walters took the game’s biggest club from the ignominy of the 2020 wooden spoon to within minutes of winning the 2023 NRL Grand Final.

“Just looking from the outside, (the Titans) are no different to the Broncos,” Walters said on the Inside Ball podcast.

“When you’re coming last, you’re doing a lot of things poorly and it doesn’t just hang with the coach, it’s the whole club.”

“The Titans need change, there’s a lot of work be done, not just by Josh Hannay but everyone,” Walters added.

The Australian Kangaroos coach then pointed to a lack of stability on the Gold Coast as potentially being a factor in the Titan’s continued struggle to deliver success.

“The clubs that have the most success are the ones that are most stable—just look at the top four right now,” he said.

“Ricky Stuart has had his moments at the Raiders, Craig Bellamy has been at the Storm for a million years, the Warriors have stuck by Andrew Webster despite missing the finals last year, they actually finished below the Broncos and now they’re in the top four again.

“I do feel for Des Hasler because the (Titans poor record) has been dumped on him, but someone else also needs to take some responsibility.”
