According to the WV Metro News, former NFL long snapper and Winfield High School assistant football coach Chris Massey has been charged with multiple misdemeanors following an altercation with one of his son’s middle school coaches.

Per the report, Massey approached Winfield Middle School assistant coach Seth Lewis, who is also a sheriff’s deputy, in the school’s parking lot last Thursday after Massey witnessed his son crying during a football practice.

Massey, who was inducted into the Marshall Sports Hall of Fame in 2015, allegedly became disruptive and was asked to leave school property but refused. Lewis, who was off duty at the time, went to his vehicle to retrieve handcuffs and call for backup.

By the time other Putnam County deputies arrived on the scene, Massey was irate and allegedly told Lewis, “I’m not leaving.” He allegedly got in Lewis’ face and smacked the officer’s handcuffs to the ground. Lewis responded by using pepper spray on Massey.

Massey was eventually taken into custody and charged with four misdemeanors, which included obstructing an officer, battery, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Massey was a four-year starter at Marshall and was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the 7th round (243rd overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft. The long snapper appeared in 141 games during his career, recording 31 total tackles, and two fumble recoveries.
