Kangaroos coach Kevin Walters has sounded out the Super League coaching ranks ahead of the Ashes tour in England.

The former Maroons coach wants to get a feel for the level of competition and brand of football being played overseas.

One of the men most qualified for that sort of advisory role is Hull KR coach Willie Peters.

Peters confirmed his interest in joining Walters’ staff, but admitted that he hadn’t yet been contacted about the opportunity.

“I haven’t spoken to him as of yet,” Peters said.

“If the phone rings – I don’t have Kevin Walters’ number – but I’m sure I’ll answer it. I’m certainly not going to hang up on him.”

Peters’ phone is set to ring plenty in the coming months as he’s been heavily linked to the newly  available coaching gig in Newcastle.

The 46-year-old has experience in the NRL system, both as a player for his time with the Rabbitohs and Dragons, and his assistant coaching role with Manly.

If a return to Australian shores is in Peters’ future, it would likely mean an advisory role on Walter’s staff would be off the table.

Australia’s 2025 tour of England will take place from late October to early November, which will force players and staff to miss the opening stages of pre-season training for their NRL clubs.

Nonetheless, with Gordon Tallis already pencilled in to one of the assistant coach openings, Peters would be a valuable sounding board for the newly appointed Australian coach.
