Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez.

Lopez would be a stellar addition to the Newcastle engine room. His ability to connect midfield to attack is remarkable, and he has a killer instinct in the final third.

Described as an ‘underrated player’ by former Barca star Pedro Rodriguez, the 22-year-old is a hard worker in the centre of the park and would suit Eddie Howe’s tactical system.

The Newcastle target bagged eight goals and 10 assists in 48 appearances last season for Barca. However, he is behind Gavi, Pedri and Dani Olmo in the pecking order.

Lopez has only played 45 minutes for Barca this season after two games, and the Magpies are ready to capitalise.

Newcastle are willing to pay up to €100 million to sign the Spanish international. Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea are also interested in him.

Newcastle cannot afford to be reckless

It would be senseless for Newcastle to splash that kind of money on Lopez, no matter how elite his talent may be.

They must be smarter in their recruitment and not get carried away by hype or potential resale value.

The Magpies are already on the verge of committing a hefty sum to bring in Nick Woltemade, another risky and expensive bet.

Doubling down with a €100m move for Lopez would be reckless.

Newcastle need to show restraint in this market and explore more attainable targets who can strengthen Howe’s squad without draining resources.
