ICE is looking to recruit 10,000 new officers this year under US president Donald Trump’s expanded immigration enforcement plan. The department of homeland security said it has received more than 130,000 applications so far.Outside the event, protesters carried signs such as “America was built by immigrants” and compared ICE to the Gestapo. Since returning to the White House, Trump has issued executive orders prioritising mass deportations, declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border, sending troops there, and seeking to end birthright citizenship for children of undocumented immigrants and foreign visitors.
