The Giants’ A-grade players were crucial to a breathtaking third-term blitz … well, most of them.

The captain struggled on the big stage, while many defenders looked vulnerable.

1. Harvey Thomas

Started on a wing next to Josh Weddle. Kicked a great goal in the third term among the Giants blitz. Finished with 14 disposals and five tackles. 5

2. Darcy Jones

What a bitter blow. Came to life in the second term with his drive and long kicking, culminating in a stunning goal from the boundary. Then came heartbreak, landing awkwardly on his knee and being immediately subbed out of the game. 5

3. Stephen Coniglio

A solid defensive midfield game, laying nine tackles. But he’s clearly no longer part of the Giants’ best on-ball brigade. 5

4. Toby Greene

Would be bitterly disappointed in his output. Didn’t stand up in key moments and couldn’t have a massive influence on the game, booting 0.2 from just 12 disposals. The lowest rated Giant on the ground. 3

5. Aaron Cadman

A monumental error midway through the third term, playing on after a strong mark then attempting a checkside goal. Finished goalless. 3

6. Lachie Whitfield

Tried his heart out. Consistently generated run and drive from the back half and was particularly influential in the third term. Finished with a team-high 36 disposals, seven intercepts and 627m gained. 8

7. Lachie Ash

Brilliant early run through the guts but couldn’t nail the kick inside 50. Had 28 touches and nine inside 50s, so had a decent crack. But often butchered the ball by foot, finishing with nine turnovers. 6

9. Ryan Angwin

Can hold his head high. Plenty of the ball in the opening minutes when the Giants were pressing and tried to get to Josh Weddle for a defensive role. Finished with 18 touches. 6

12. Tom Green

What a player. Set the tone early with 10 first-quarter touches then was instrumental in the Giants’ third-term blitz. A colossal performance, finishing with 34 touches, 20 contested possessions, 12 clearances and seven inside 50s. 8

14. Toby Bedford

Good defensive pressure early around the coalface and snapped two much-needed goals, firstly just before quarter-time then during the third quarter surge — the term where he was most influential. 6

15. Sam Taylor

The All-Australian full-back wasn’t at his reliable best. Went to Mabior Chol in the first term. Just couldn’t get his intercept mark game going. 4

17. Finn Callaghan

This guy is born for finals. Sparked the Giants with a brilliant running goal amid nine touches in the first term. Then was crucial in the third term with 12 touches as Garry Lyon lauded Callaghan’s “unbelievable” workrate. Finished with 34 disposals, eight score involvements, eight tackles and 833m gained. 9

20. Jake Stringer

The Package threatened, but ultimately didn’t deliver. Didn’t fire early, but worked his way into the game by feeding other players. But finished with 0.2 from only 10 touches and one tackle. 4

21. Leek Aleer

Looked vulnerable at times in defence rotating through numerous opponents. Almost certainly his last game as a Giant. 4

22. Josh Kelly

The definition of the “super sub”, as per Jonathan Brown! Started as the 23rd man and was injected into the game late in the second quarter after Darcy Jones. Wound back the clock to 2017 form with a third quarter for the ages: two goals from 14 disposals, nine contested possessions, five score involvements, six clearances and three inside 50s. In fact it was the highest-rated quarter by a Giants player in a final ever. Brown told Fox Footy: “He’s given them a lift … he’s given them some life and energy.” 8

23. Jesse Hogan

Had Tom Barrass for company and was well beaten early, but got a confidence-booster goal early in the second term after flushing a long-range set-shot. Then found his radar in the second half when it mattered with a couple of set-shot goals. 6

26. Jake Riccardi

Kicked a steadying goal in the first term amid his teammates’ issues to convert opportunities. Competed well in the ruck and finished with 15 touches. 5

27. Harry Himmelberg

Like many of the Giants key defenders, struggled to handle the Hawks’ slick inside 50 work and gave away a crucial free kick late. A season-low nine touches, so generated little drive and rebound from the defensive half. 3

32. Kieren Briggs

Cracking ruck battle with Lloyd Meek — and they were equally as influential. Pulled off a remarkable second-quarter goal, soccering the ball out of mid-air in a ruck contest for a stunning major. Finished with 16 touches, eight clearances and six score involvements, while 18 of his 45 hit-outs went to a teammate’s advantage. 7

33. Xavier O’Halloran

Flushed a towering goal late in the third term amid the Giants surge. Had 17 touches, but gave away four free kicks. 5

37. Joe Fonti

Stood next to Nick Watson early. Took the game on with confidence beyond his years in the third term. Finished with nine touches. 5

39. Connor Idun

Went to Jack Gunston at the first bounce. Was strong in his one-on-one contests. 5

46. Callum Brown

An early brain snap with a fist to James Worpel’s mid-section led to a fourth-straight Hawks goal. Finished scoreless from 11 touches. 3
