Sydney Sweeney’s Transformation for the Role of a Boxer

Sydney Sweeney admitted that filming the biopic about Christy Martin was not easy for her: she gained two stones for this role.

Sweeney stars in the film ‘Christy’, which tells the incredible life and career of boxing champion Christy Martin. Preparing for the role required serious transformation.

Martin married her trainer Jim Martin, despite being a lesbian, but after he attempted to kill her, resulting in knife and gunshot wounds, she survived. Jim received 25 years of imprisonment.

The film about this brutal life story of Martin will feature Sydney Sweeney, who underwent radical changes to embody the role.

To prepare, Sweeney trained with a boxing coach for three months, performing strength exercises and following a special diet.

She trained up to three times a day, gaining weight by eating at Chick-fil-A and drinking milkshakes.

During filming, she had to work 12 hours, and then go back to training.

Sweeney told Variety: ‘I was getting hit. They were putting ice packs on my face between takes. I got a few nasty bruises.’

She recalled the grueling schedule: ‘I finished shooting after 12 hours, and then went to train for another two. The whole week was exhausting.’

To transform into Martin, Sweeney used a dark wig and brown contact lenses, and gained 30 pounds.

She noted: ‘I had a nutritionist working with me, as well as a strength and boxing coach. We increased my calorie intake, I started consuming a lot of protein shakes and supplements.’

The film, which has received positive reviews from critics and could earn Sweeney an Oscar nomination, will be released in November in theaters.

Directed by Australian David Michod, the film also features actor Ben Foster, who plays Martin’s abusive ex-husband and coach.

Christy Martin, who left boxing in 2012 and now works as a promoter and motivator, visited Sweeney on set.

Sweeney also added: “I’m just excited that Christy’s story is now available to the public.”
