Former Chinese ambassador to Australia Fu Ying has urged Canberra to tone down its rhetoric towards Beijing if it wants to be better understood and respected on the mainland, as she described China as a rising power waiting for Washington to recognise the costs of its trade policy.

Fu, who served as Beijing’s envoy to Canberra from 2003 to 2007, said Australia’s image in China was “complicated” and often damaged by negative media coverage that portrays China as a threat.
