GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – The No. 7 Texas A&M women’s golf team was three shots back of Baylor for the top spot on the team leaderboard Tuesday at the Folds of Honor Collegiate after shooting a 3-over 291 in the second round at the American Dunes Golf Club.
“The golf course is winning, and we just have to stay patient,” head coach Gerrod Chadwell said. “The front nine plays harder than the back and we played it well so that is why we had the lead at the turn. We had some uncharacteristic mistakes on the back that let our round get away from us. All things considered, we had a really solid finish with Cata, Vanessa and Natalie birdieing 18 that narrowed the gap for us. We will be in a fight tomorrow and we can’t wait to get back out there.”
Baylor (+5) shot 1-over 289 in the second round and the Aggies were at 9-over 585 thru 36 holes. Texas A&M was ahead of six ranked teams in No. 16 North Carolina (+16), No. 30 Kansas (+17), No. 18 Florida State (+18), No. 22 Michigan State (+18), No. 15 Ohio State (+27) and No. 26 Arizona State (+30).
Sky Sudberry turned in a strong round at 1-under 71 to launch her into a tie for eighth at 2-over 146 heading into Wednesday. The junior birdied four of her first 10 holes and then had an immaculate par save on No. 18 after a wayward fairway shot gave her an awkward lie out of the left fairway bunker that she reached the green with.
Kort was still leading the Aggies on the individual leaderboard after the second round at 1-under 143. The freshman was in solo third and was five shots back of Kentucky’s Anastasia Hekkonen and Baylor’s Silje Ohma for the lead.
Cayetana Fernández García-Poggio and Natalie Yen both nailed clutch birdies on No. 18 that cut into the Baylor lead before the round ended. The pair was tied for 15th and 29th, respectively, and each golfer shot 2-over 74 Tuesday.
Vanessa Borovilos went 5-over 77 in round two and held onto a piece of 15th heading into Wednesday’s final round.
Texas A&M tees off at 7:15 a.m. Wednesday. Golf Channel will televise the final round beginning at 10:30 a.m. Live stats for the tournament can be followed at scoreboard.clippd.com.
