There was a slight shuffling lower down the GC top 10, but the top four climbed the brutal Bola del Mundo together, until the red jersey attacked for victory just outside the flamme rouge.

The Vuelta a España appeared finely poised going into the stage 20 mountain showdown. With just 44 seconds separating the top two and questions over both of them – one to do with health, team support the other – the final mountain stage was set to define the outcome of the Spanish Grand Tour. On a finale such as the brutal Bola del Mundo, anything could happen, but in the end, it was the red jersey who stayed firmly in control, biding his time until a couple hundred metres outside the flamme rouge where he made his move.
Jonas Vingegaard crossed the finish line 11 seconds ahead of teammate Sepp Kuss, with Jai Hindley third after trying in vain to drop Tom Pidcock in the last few kilometres of the climb. The Brit finished a handful of seconds after Hindley to defend a landmark GC podium, with second-overall João Almeida settling for fifth on the stage. The Dane’s third stage win means he takes a lead of 1:16 to Madrid for the Vuelta’s final stage.
