Rising Storm star Jonah Pezet has opened up on his contract future, with his agent revealing his immediate future is “up in the air”.

The 22-year-old was thrown into the No.7 jersey against the Bulldogs, with Craig Bellamy putting his faith in the experienced playmaker who delivered in spades.

Pezet was one of the best on the park, putting his name in lights with rivals set to circle the talented halfback who is now a free agent despite his current deal which runs until the end of 2029.

His agent, Braith Anasta, had a clause inserted in his contract which rendered him a free agent should Jahrome Hughes re-sign, who signed a fresh deal until 2030 in July.

It’s been widely reported the Rabbitohs turned down a loan deal for the promising playmaker, and speaking on NRL360 on Tuesday night, Pezet opened up on his current situation.

“As I said before, I am focused on the finals series for us. But I am sort of an open book at the moment to any sort of loan deals or whatever that might be,” he explained.

“Obviously the club has had a fair bit of experience in 2020 loaning out Harry (Grant) there for a bit.

“But as the man in the studio would know that’s sort of his job and my job is to play good footy and to give him the most amount of options that we can look forward to.”

Despite his stellar finals performance, Pezet looks set to be demoted to the bench or be dropped completely for the preliminary finals with Jahrome Hughes a chance of returning.

The Storm’s regular No.7 suffered a fractured forearm in Round 27, but after a successful surgery which saw a plate inserted in his arm, is set to take the field.

“I’m not quite sure yet, Hughes is tracking pretty well for the prelim, so that will be his jersey when he comes back,” Pezet said.

“I always have full confidence in myself to be an NRL halfback and do that week in, week out. Sort of just focused at the moment on putting my best foot forward at the club.

“Preparing the boys and preparing myself, because the next two weeks you never know what is going to happen, it’s NRL finals.

“We’ve seen what has happened in the past with other teams, even this weekend with blokes going down, blokes being suspended.

NRL360 host Anasta was also pressed on Pezet’s future, admitting his preference is to remain with the Storm but that would mean playing second fiddle to Hughes.

“As it stands right now, technically he is off contract. I had the clause in there with Jahrome… we have been looking for the one-year loan,” Anasta said.

“But we are not sure where this is going to land right now, it’s sort of up in the air. But technically, he is a free agent.

“Of course (his preference) is to stay, but he is also a smart kid. Jahrome is the No.7 and he’s just re-signed.

“We saw the other night how he plays as a No.7.”

Meanwhile, Fox League’s Paul Crawley added: “It’s s big difference between being on loan for one year and taking Jonah for five to ten years”.
